Spring daisies and sowing more seeds

daisies

There is an old proverb that states "Spring has come when you can put your foot on three daisies" and another that says "When you can place your foot on 7 Daisies at once, then summer has come". Well, I'm not sure about that but the daisies our out in profusion today. A couple of days of gorgeous sunshine and they have popped their heads out to welcome the Spring. The word "daisy" comes from two Anglo-Saxon words - "daeyes" and "eayes" - "day's eye", as they open up in the daylight and close when daylight dwindles.

Well, whichever you believe, they are all around today and I could place my foot on at least 3, not that I would. They are a lovely welcome sight of Spring and the Summer to follow.

ready to sow some seeds

Moving on to what we have been up to in addition to increasing our fruit stock. More seed sowing which we did in the kitchen on a makeshift potting shelf (tray on a table) to avoid the rain outside (this was at the weekend). We sowed:
Tomatillo Violet
Tomato Black Russian
Tomato Zuckertraube
Tomato Gardeners Delight
Tomato Sun Dried
Chili Hungarian Wax
Chili Habanero
Achocha
Early Dwarf Pea - Hatif D'Annonay
Celeriac - Prinz
Leeks - Colossal (HSL)
Melon - Blenheim Orange
Melon - Jenny Lind (HSL)
(all organic varieties, most of the tomatoes and the Achocha from saved seeds)

Imogen had great fun as usual sprinkling the seeds, covering them with some compost and writing the labels very very well. In fact on a couple I thought they were labels i had written! We did two pots of each (except the Peas) and I wrote one label and Imogen copied them onto a second label.

this one is for the Achocha

Excuse the "plant a seed" sign on the compost - still on there from when Alex was at an event recently and getting children to plant a seed to take home, encouraging more children and families to grow.

Busy, busy , busy with the seeds now March has arrived. There will be lots more sowing over the next few weeks and months.

Here are the ones we have done this weekend that need to stay indoors for a while as they germinate, and will move out to the greenhouse when it is warm enough.

Now that the weather is warming up, there will be more opportunities to sow outside or at least in the unheated greenhouse. If it stays dry enough I may even get the lawnmower out this week for the first grass cutting of the year, it has visibly grown recently and the clippings are always welcome for the compost or to make some seed growing compost.

  1. You can always tell that March is here when the windowsills start filling up with seed trays. Mine look very similar.
